GAHK was formed by a group of FGA in Hongkong in l978, with major objective to promote gemmology to the public and to the trade, seeing that Hongkong was getting to play very important role in the World gemstone trading yet at that time, business were done purely on experiences of individuals and gemmology were rarely talked about.
The founding chairman was Dr. David Healey, professor of Dept. of Physics in Hongkong University.

An SME Development fund was granted to the GAHK to develop an Accredited Gemmological Certification and Label Scheme for diamonds and jadeite.
